Hepatitis C

Description

A liver disease that persists over a long period of time, potentially resulting in a progressive destruction of the liver. In the end stages patients may have problems clotting their blood, and can become confused. There are many causes with longstanding alcohol abuse and viral infections being the most common.

Symptoms

Abdominal pain, abdominal bloating, easy bleeding, vomiting, confusion, yellowing skin, weakness.

Treatment

Treatment depends on the cause of the liver failure and the extent of the liver failure but may include: diuretics for fluid overload, lactulose for confusion, blood products or vitamin K for bleeding, and/or antibiotics for infection. A surgical procedure, called transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) or liver transplant may be recommended.

Until recently, there was no cure for chronic hepatitis C. But new antiviral drugs, such as simeprevir (Olysio, sofosbuvir (Sovaldi), sofosbuvir-ledipasvir combination (Harvoni), suggest cure for some may be possible. In some instances, the infection causes liver failure and those individuals may be considered for a liver transplant. Hepatitis A and B vaccines will most likely be recommended to prevent further damage to the liver.

Peginterferon Alfa-2A

Peginterferon Alfa-2A is used alone or in combination with ribavarin (a medication) to treat chronic (long term) hepatitis C infection (selling of the liver caused by a virus) in people who show signs of liver damage and who have not been treated with interferon alpha (medication similar to peg-interferon alfa-2a) in the past. Peginterferon alfa-2a is also used to treat chronic hepatitis B infection (swelling of the liver casued by a virus) in people who show signs of liver damage. Peginterferon alfa-2A is in a class of medications called interferons. Peginterferon is a combination of interferon and polyethylene glycol, which helps the interferon stay active in your body for a longer period of time. Peginerferon works by decreasing the amount of hepatitis C virus (HCV) or hepatitis B virus (HBV) in the body. Peginterferon alfa-2A may not cure hepatitis C or hepatitis B or prevent you from developing complications of hepatitis C or hepatitis B such as cirrhosis (scarring) of the liver, liver failure, or liver cancer. Peginterferon alfa-2A may not prevent the spread of hepatitis C or hepatitis B to other people.

Peginterferon Alfa-2B

Peginterferon Alfa-2B is used alone or in combination with ribavarin (a medication) to treat chronic (long term) hepatitis C infection (selling of the liver caused by a virus) in people who show signs of liver damage and who have not been treated with interferon alpha (medication similar to peg-interferon alfa-2B) in the past. Peginterferon alfa-2a is also used to treat chronic hepatitis B infection (swelling of the liver casued by a virus) in people who show signs of liver damage. Peginterferon alfa-2B is in a class of medications called interferons. Peginterferon is a combination of interferon and polyethylene glycol, which helps the interferon stay active in your body for a longer period of time. Peginerferon works by decreasing the amount of hepatitis C virus (HCV) or hepatitis B virus (HBV) in the body. Peginterferon alfa-2B may not cure hepatitis C or hepatitis B or prevent you from developing complications of hepatitis C or hepatitis B such as cirrhosis (scarring) of the liver, liver failure, or liver cancer. Peginterferon alfa-2B may not prevent the spread of hepatitis C or hepatitis B to other people.

Ribavirin

Ribavirin is used with an interferon medication such as peginterferon alfa-2A (Pegasys) or peginterferon alpha-2B (PEG-Intron) to treat hepatitis C in people who have not been treated with an interferon before. Ribavirin is in a class of antiviral medications called nucleoside analogues. It works by stopping the virus that causes hepatitis C from spreading inside the body. It is not known if treatment that includes ribavirin and another medication cures hepatitis C infection, prevents live damage that may be caused by hepatitis C, or prevents the spread of hepatitis C to other people.
